In modern times, we often consider the conflict in and for Ireland based on sectarian terms: Catholics versus Protestants. But when we consider that the original invaders were themselves Catholics and even sanctioned by the Pope, is it worth considering if the irreconcilable nature of these two islands is based on something other than religious prejudices?
In my personal view, the clash was not religious. It was a clash of law systems.
The Irish, who were spared the Roman Empire’s ravages, did not get their right to rule through Papal sanction or decree. Such an autonomous and independent people, whose systems and lineages of kingship far pre-dated that of European monarchies and the Vatican, stood as a direct threat to the emerging order.
