Beltaine’s Sun – A Poem

As Bealtaine arrives, we ignite the two sacred fires in memory of the manners of our forbears…

“Who struggled and thrived in cold months and warm,
so that we might survive to see summer’s sun.

“With dignity, honour, with love and with art.
Alight the twin flames of our minds and our hearts.

“Let them burn brightly and sacred cows walk,
with a promise of bounty through our consciousness’ spark.

“Winter is over. The cold darkness has passed.
There are buds on the trees. As Beltaine draws fast.

“The lambs will be leaping soon through the fields with their ewe.
The morning grass gently covered with dew.

“Safe in the promises of better, brighter, times
now gently rising on the horizon of our hearts and of minds.

“The warrior rests no more in their winter retreats.
The maiden is walking the shoreline amidst the wind and lapping waves.

“Arise, spirit. For there is work to be done.
The promise of the harvest comes through work, it’s hard-won.

“For work precedes rest as rest precedes work.
Work for oneself, our kin, and the earth.

“Arise, my spirit, for Beltaine is here.
Arise, my body, for sowing draws near.
Arise, my mind, there is work to be done.
Alas! On the horizon shines Beltaine’s sun.

Kevin Flanagan, written on the Beltaine’s eve 2021.

May the summer months burn away our fears, illness, and our frailties.
May this first summer’s morn of May bring happiness, blessings, and a deeply felt courage to you all.
