I remember coming across this production about two years ago and how the content struck a deep chord with me.
It was the sort of production that one could imagine lovers of Irish history complaining there isn’t enough of, or any at all. And I’d agree, we certainly do need to talk about Ireland, it’s a conversation that’s long overdue.
I’m not talking about the Ireland of NAMAs and Bailouts, brain-drains, housing-crises, cronyism and cow-towing to foreign bureaucracies.
I’m talking about an Ireland with a history more ancient than history and reason allows us imagine.
An Ireland once called the land of Saints and Scholars, advanced in its learning and its arts.
An Ireland of warriors with their warrior code.
An Ireland, with its cold dark and harsh winters and its long drawn out and sometimes satisfying summers.
An Ireland of music, both joyous and mournful.
An Ireland of poetry and philosophy, of justice and equity.
An Ireland that has been hurt, but one that has overcome its adversities with dignity.
An Ireland worth remembering and deserving of recognition and respect.
Finding this video was like finding a rare gem for me. Here we have a modern digital expression of a message, similar to the one I am trying to make here with the Brehon Law Academy, being made today by an assembly of artists, writers, musicians, and people, just Irish people, gathered in this collaborative celebration of Ireland’s past, present, and future.
